How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take? A Realistic Timeline From Demo to Done

If you're planning a bathroom remodel in the Philadelphia suburbs, one of the first questions you're probably asking is: how long is this actually going to take?

You've probably heard the horror stories: a contractor quotes two weeks and the project drags on for four months. The bathroom is torn apart, you're sharing a shower with your kids, and the finish line keeps moving.

At CT Tile & Remodeling, we believe in setting realistic expectations from day one. So here it is, straight: a typical full bathroom remodel with our team is completed in approximately 9 working days. That number can shift depending on the size, scope, materials, and the condition of your existing space — but it's our standard, and we work hard to hit it.

This post walks you through exactly what happens on each of those days, so you know what to expect before your project begins.

Important Pre-Project Prep Work

Before demo day, there are a few important phases that set the project up for success.

  • The consultation is where it all begins. You reach out by phone at (215) 500-5473 or through our contact form and we schedule a free in-home estimate. Owner, Catalin Tudor, will personally discuss your goals with you, assess the existing conditions, and start building a picture of what the remodel will involve. This visit is free and an important first step in establishing the project timeline.

  • The planning phase is where layout decisions, tile selections, fixture choices, and design direction get locked in. You’re welcome to provide your own materials, or if you haven't chosen yet, we invite you to visit our showroom at 713 Bethlehem Pike in Glenside to see options in person. Comparing tile samples under real lighting, next to vanity finishes and grout colors, can make a meaningful difference in your final result.

  • Our advice before construction begins: it’s important to have all your materials selected and on-site before day one. Tile, fixtures, vanity, lighting — everything. Waiting on a backordered fixture or a special-order tile is the most preventable cause of project delays. The planning phase exists precisely to eliminate that problem.

Once materials are confirmed and a start date is set, here's what the 9 day timeline looks like.

Day 1 — Preparation & Demolition

Demo day moves quickly. Site protection goes up throughout your home: drop cloths on every surface our team walks on, and organized staging for materials and tools. We then begin by carefully removing existing materials including tile, flooring, the vanity, fixtures, and any drywall that needs to come out. We haul everything off-site, and by the end of day one, the space is stripped down and fully prepared for construction to begin properly. What looked like a bathroom in the morning looks like a blank canvas by the afternoon.

Day 2 — Rough Work: Framing, Electrical, & Plumbing

With the walls open, day two is for the work that will be hidden behind tile and drywall for the next few decades. Any framing adjustments needed for the new layout are completed first. Then rough electrical and rough plumbing work gets done… moving a drain, repositioning a shower valve, running wire for new lighting or a heated floor thermostat.

This is the right time to make any layout changes, because once the walls close, making adjustments becomes significantly more expensive. If you've been thinking about adding a second showerhead, relocating the toilet, or upgrading to a linear drain, day two is when those decisions happen inside the walls.

Day 3 — Insulation, Drywall, & Waterproofing

Day three is arguably the most important day of the entire project (even though it's completely invisible in the finished bathroom).

Insulation is installed where needed. Drywall goes up. And then waterproofing begins. This step determines whether your bathroom holds up beautifully for 30 years, or starts developing moisture problems within five.

We use Schluter Systems on every shower we build. The Schluter waterproofing membrane creates a fully sealed, watertight assembly bonded directly to the walls and floor, with no gaps at seams, corners, or drain penetrations. Water simply has nowhere to go except down the drain.

This is not a step that gets rushed or skipped on our projects. We're certified Schluter installers, and the Schluter system is part of why our work holds up the way it does. You can read more about these products on our Schluter waterproofing page.

Day 4 — Substrate & Surface Preparation

With waterproofing complete, day four is about creating the right foundation for tile. Cement backerboard is installed in tile areas. If you've selected a heated floor system (the Schluter DITRA-HEAT electric floor warming system is what we install), the heating cables are laid out and embedded during this phase.

Surfaces are inspected, checked for plumb and level, and fully prepared for finishing. Nothing goes on top of a surface that isn't right. This preparation phase is what gives tile installations their longevity, and what separates a professional job from one that looks good for a year before the grout starts cracking.

Day 5 — Painting

Walls and ceilings are painted on day five, before any fixtures or tile go in. Painting at this stage, rather than at the end, means clean lines, no masking around finished tile, and a polished look throughout the entire space.

This is also a practical efficiency: by painting now, the final days of the project can focus entirely on installation and finishing rather than working around a paint job.

Days 6 & 7 — Tile Installation

This is the phase where the transformation becomes visible.

Tile is installed with care and precision for consistent joint spacing, perfectly plumb vertical lines, accurate cuts around niches, fixtures, and transitions. Shower walls go up first, followed by the floor. Large-format tile, complex patterns, custom niches, and linear drains all add time and craft to this phase.

Grout is applied after the thin-set mortar has cured fully. The color and width of your grout joints (decisions made during the planning phase) play a major role in the final character of the finished space. Our team takes these details seriously, because they're the details you'll look at every single day.

Day 8 — Fixture Installation

With tile complete, day eight is for bringing the space to life. Vanities are set. Lighting is installed. Plumbing fixtures including faucets, shower valves, the toilet, etc., are connected and tested. Electrical components are also finalized.

We handle tile, plumbing, and electrical as part of our full-service remodel, which means you're not coordinating between multiple contractors and hoping they all show up in the right order. One team, one timeline, one point of contact throughout.

Day 9 — Final Details & Cleaning

The last day takes your remodel from "almost done" to beautifully finished.

Glass shower enclosures, if included in your project, are installed. Caulk is applied at all transitions, such as where the tile meets the tub, where the floor meets the wall, and around fixtures. Hardware is mounted. Any final touch-ups are addressed.

Then we do a complete professional cleaning of the space. Not a quick wipe-down. We bring in a professional cleaning team for a thorough clean so your new bathroom is ready to use the moment we leave. We also do a final walkthrough with you to review every detail. Grout lines, caulk joints, fixture function, hardware alignment... if anything doesn't meet your expectations, we address it on the spot.

This is the standard we hold every project to.

What Can Add Time to the Timeline?

Of course, not every project will follow this exact timeline, and being transparent means talking about what can extend the standard 9-day window. Here are the most common factors:

Scope & Complexity

A straightforward full bath replacement runs close to the 9-day standard. A master bathroom with a custom curbless shower, heated floors, a freestanding tub, and a double vanity may take longer — and is worth every extra day.

Layout Changes

Moving plumbing, as in relocating a toilet, shifting a shower drain, repositioning a vanity wall, etc., may add time to day two. We’ll help you plan for it and budget accordingly.

Unexpected Conditions

We work in a lot of older homes in the Philadelphia suburbs, which sometimes reveal surprises behind the walls. Outdated plumbing, undetected water damage, or a substrate that needs more work than expected may require special attention. We address these correctly rather than tiling over them. And though it adds time, it is always the right call.

Material Availability

Special-order tile or a custom vanity with a six-week lead time pushes the start date, not the construction timeline. This is why the planning phase matters, locking in materials early keeps the schedule on track.

What Our Clients Say

"Catalin and his team are the very best! I was amazed that they completed the entire project in just 8 days. Their quality and workmanship is even more impressive. Catalin communicated with us every step of the way to make sure we were happy with the results. They did everything — tile, plumbing, electrical — and left the bathroom completely finished and ready to paint." —Allison Tether Crescimanno

"Catalin takes tremendous pride in his work. CT Tile covered all surfaces they walked on with drop cloths, organized all of their tools at the end of the day just to keep the area looking nice, and treated our home with respect. But above all, Catalin just really cares — about you, your job, your house, your experience with him." —Daniel
